Copyright and Image Use
Pictures are both a craft and a question of rights. This page explains who owns the photographs we make, what you as a client can do with them, how we deal with the right to your own image, and which pictures are used on this website.

1. Who owns the pictures
Copyright in photographs made by In The Darkroom belongs to the photographer who took them, in line with Norwegian copyright law. That also applies when the pictures were made on assignment for you. Copyright is not transferred on delivery, but you receive a clear and lasting usage right — see the point below.
Raw files, negatives and scans count as working material and are not part of the delivery unless otherwise agreed in writing.
2. Your usage rights as a client
Unless otherwise agreed in writing, you receive a lasting, non-exclusive right to use the delivered pictures from your own assignment for:
- your own websites, social media, newsletters and presentations;
- printed matter, prints, albums and exhibitions in your own premises;
- press coverage of you or your business;
- private use and sharing within the family.
The usage right does not cover:
- resale, rental or transfer of the pictures to a third party;
- use in advertising for businesses other than your own;
- editing that substantially changes the expression of the picture — heavy retouching, filters, cropping that changes the meaning, or generative editing;
- submission to stock libraries or competitions in your own name.
If you need wider use than this — for example campaign use over time or exclusivity — that is agreed in writing before the session. Brand clients such as SpinBoss, Kazeeno, SpinWinera, Grizzlys and Slotrave have extended campaign licences written into their agreements.
3. Crediting
The photographer shall be credited as good practice requires, cf. section 5 of the Norwegian Copyright Act. In practice that means “Photo: In The Darkroom” in the caption, colophon or post text wherever it is practically possible. When sharing on social media we appreciate a mention of the studio, but we do not require it for private pictures of you and your family.
4. Use of content from this website
The text, structure, graphics and picture selection on inthedarkroom.org are protected material. You may link freely to the pages and quote short extracts with a source reference. You may not copy whole pages, download the pictures for your own use, or reuse the material commercially without written permission.
Automated collection of content — scraping, indexing beyond ordinary search engines, or gathering material to train machine learning models — is not permitted without a written agreement. This applies to both text and photographs.
5. The right to your own image
A photograph depicting a person may only be published with that person's consent, cf. section 104 of the Norwegian Copyright Act. We apply this strictly:
- We never publish pictures of clients in the portfolio, on the website or on social media without written consent to exactly that use.
- Consent can be withdrawn at any time, without giving a reason. We then remove the pictures from our own channels, normally within five working days.
- For pictures of children, consent is required from everyone with parental responsibility, and we ask the child too when they are old enough to have an opinion.
- At weddings and events the client is responsible for informing guests that photographs are being taken.
6. Notice of alleged infringement
If you believe that a picture or a text on this website infringes your rights, send a description of the material and where it appears to [email protected]. We look into the matter, and take the material down temporarily while it is being handled if there is reasonable cause to do so.
7. Image credits for this website
The photographs shown on the front page and in the portfolio are freely licensed pictures, used as illustrations while the site is being built up. They come from StockSnap and Rawpixel via Openverse, and carry the CC0 1.0 licence — free reuse with no attribution required.
Once the studio's own work is added, these pictures will be replaced, and the people portrayed will by then have given written consent under the rules in point 5. The same goes for the client work shown under names such as SpinBoss, Kazeeno, SpinWinera, Grizzlys and Slotrave. No pictures on the website are generated with artificial intelligence.
